Holistic Occupational Therapy
Holistic Occupational Therapy for addiction recovery is an emerging CAM Specialty (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) that integrates Mind, Body, & Spirit therapies with the best of Occupational Therapy practices to provide health, wellness, and disease prevention services.
What is Occupational Therapy?
O.T.s ask "What matters to you?" not "What's the matter with you?" Simply put, occupational therapists help people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations.) Common occupational therapy interventions include helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills, and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes.
Occupational therapy services include comprehensive evaluations, customized interventions, treatment plans and goal-setting. Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team.
Holistic OTs incorporate many holistic therapies into their practices, and these interventions are in line with the theory and scope of OT practice as seen in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework.. Further, AOTA asserts that CAM may be used responsibly by occupational therapists as part of a comprehensive approach to enhance engagement in occupation by people, organizations and populations to promote their health and participation in life.
The role occupational therapists play in addiction recovery:
After someone is diagnosed with a substance abuse problem, one of the primary ways OTs help is by teaching coping skills and alternative approaches to manage pain or other aspects of patient’s lives—without resorting to alcohol, opioids or other pharmaceuticals.
Occupational therapists can teach other strategies to those trying to recover from substance abuse, as well, including:
• Stress management techniques such as mindfulness meditation, guided imagery, and progressive muscle relaxation;
• Sleep hygiene, which involves promoting the habits and practices necessary to ensure good sleep quality and full daytime alertness;
• Reframing a problem so it is not seen as a crisis;
• Activity pacing and alternative approaches, which teach patients how to avoid additional injuries when they’re already suffering from pain or an existing injury.
